Sherlock BTS: What are We Looking At?
The camera and camera operator are on a wheeled truck that’s on a track. The truck is called a dolly and the bald guy with the hoodie at the rear is the dolly grip. Preparing and operating the dolly is his responsibility. When the director (in this case Euros Lyn) calls action, the dolly grip will push the dolly, the camera operator, the camera and its rig forwards on the track. When the camera is on and recording, this motion allows the camera to zoom towards the action.
(I love the glimpse of the ceiling. It tells us we’re probably not filming in a studio and that the spectacular lighting was done on location.)
The fellow on the right is the camera assistant, 1st AC, aka the focus puller. The fallow focus knob is sticking out on the right of the camera. Focus pullers are responsible for… well… maintaining focus. They do this mainly through the power of math and their own mind’s eye. Focus pullers don’t look through the view finder or a monitor to do their jobs! In theory the actors will have predetermined marks to hit so the focus puller will know the settings in advance, but actors act and miss their marks for all kinds of reasons, so the focus puller has to be in tune with their unexpected movements to make sure everything doesn’t go all blurry. Here’s a behind the scenes photo from Pink of the crew tape measuring Martin’s mark for the focus puller below.
They’re either in rehearsal and prepping the mark to tell Martin where to step, or they’re checking to make sure the shot they just did was acceptably in focus. Looks like they’re rehearsing to me.
